Soon, newsstories about the recovery of survivors from disasters should be more common thanks to a new radar product developed by Cinsides.
With a price tag under 10,000€, a radar called CPR3 secures information when it detects life through walls. In the not-so-far future, the company anticipates the tool to be able to locate people trapped in rubble, behind walls in mine shafts, and any difficult or impossible to reach location.
“ Our wall radar detects movement. It is built to secure information,” says Dan Axelsson, Cinsides founder and CEO.
Two years ago, Dan Axelsson left his job as a radar specialist at the National Defense Research Agency (FOI) in Linköping and began to develop technology based on his knowledge of the business.
Working with LEAD, the Mjärdevi-based business incubator, Axelsson established Cinsides and manufactured a small portable radar weighing approximately one kilogram. A symbol on the display indicates whether there is a living creature on the other side of a wall or obstruction.
Technology that was only possible in Hollywood films is now possible in real life. The device is being tested by defense and emergency services. So, while it may be capable of locating terrorists, it is a tool that Axelsson envisions as lifesaving where the radar can help firefighters and rescue workers find people.
“The critical situations involved in civilian applications provide challenging development demands,” says Axelsson. “but we intend to work towards making this operable in civilian rescue operations.”
Cinsides is currently doing its own assembly and operations as it develops new radar systems that are small, inexpensive and easy to handle.
